B.N.I. Dawn Networking and does it work?

March 11th, 2010

There is a BNI meeting happening all over Bangkok well with 15 chapters, two of them English speaking chapters, that’s a lot of meetings, do they work? And is it worth getting up well before dawn to get there?

Members arrive in business dress and start networking before most have even reached R.E.M. They are high on caffeine and most of them are the real positive crowd they run a strict meeting keeping to the 0715 start, but you have to register before seven if you want a chance to present.

After seating, and the tables are the responsibility of the ‘professionalism master’ to make sure it’s well …’professional’ ? The President starts and runs through an agenda of what is BNI. The format is not just for Thailand, it was started in the mid eighties in the US and they proclaim to have been active in helping billions of dollars swap hands amongst its members. UK and Australia and Malaysia have some pretty serious Platinum chapters of fifty or more members.

After about 30 minutes of overviews then they start, each member gets up and presents in front of their fellow members, they call this educating the group about what they do but what makes this group unique is they ask for specific referrals
“This week I am looking for the Marketing manager at car manufacturing plants like Toyota or Hyundai”
They have a ‘time person’ and a bell and you have exactly sixty seconds!
Then the other members write on prepared sheets a referral they know whom they could help get the BNI member in touch with.

One of the best things is that there is a’ Industry lock out’ meaning if you are the chapter plumber or the chapter lawyer there can be no other competitor in your chapter. Membership is around 15000 THB for the year. You can attend other chapters when visiting other countries’ you can visit three times and just pay the breakfast but you will be sold the membership each time!

There is a ten minute presentation each week by one of the members and towards the end they swap the referrals then at 0900 A.M. the meeting is over and they retire for breakfast where a lot of good networking gets done. 95% of the attendees are Business Owners as it’s hard to get staff to get up at that time for you!

What we found after attending was that the people who do well, would do well at any network event, and have a large demographic of people they can reach out to. If you have a niche business or a targeted demographic within a small manufacturing sector you will probably struggle. That’s why almost every chapter has a lawyer, IT guy, magazine, small hotel, accountant etc

There will always be the, as in any networking the people who see it as a way to meet new friends and business is well, secondary, but you could find these people anywhere, God knows why they get up at that time perhaps they want to find fellow insomniacs.

Our verdict: Well worth it if you are NOT grumpy in the mornings, are friendly, and willing to help your fellow members find business, and you don’t mind presenting your company to at least 25 other business owners and their guests every week. You do have to put the ‘work’ in network.

Editors’ conclusion: Well it seems the finance wizards amongst us will see a bigger picture however I take a more pragmatic view. People still travel and use us to find the best travel agents. But just looking around at the number of cranes in Bangkok the construction industry is not bothered by the recession that much. Automobile, the highest climber? perhaps Toyota owners are looking for help from the local garages. Fashion down -well maybe the exchange rate is hurting exports? But the rest of manufacturing is stable. Still seeing Arts in the top ten can someone help me with that?

Don’t get burned by unscrupulous SEO and social marketing agents.

March 6th, 2010

Ok so you are flat out at work and you have to get your head around this Internet marketing thing, so you see an ad online or in the paper promising you better results from Google or huge traffic to your website. We were burned once so here we will give you some tips so you don’t get burned:

*1 Learn for your self the keys of Internet Marketing. It really is not that difficult and after you have done the ground work of adding profiles to as many social book marking sites you can then find many ways to send your articles to many sites with a few clicks.

*2 Learn to blog or find friends who are good writers and send their articles world wide on line that way you are seen as a good friend and business contact whilst growing your online presence.

*3 SEO there are no real secrets to SEO just time consuming work. Older sites will always beat newer sites if their SEO is solid, so stop stressing about it and provide a better experience. Ok the top site will get the clicks but if you are No 2 soon , very soon people will know you are the better choice and will ignore’ Google’s advice’

Just click view and then page source oooh.. Scary code.. relax just look for keywords then following are your keywords the very essence of what Google is looking for. Make sure they say what you would look for on your site, same with Description.

*4 Redirect traffic there are many sites who will tell you we will send you traffic yes they can but the tell tale sign is the bounce rate. Bounce rate means how long someone stayed on your site. If you had a party and everybody stayed for just 30 seconds and left what does that say about you or your party same with a website!

Redirects should be approached as a way of finding a few new regular visitors through the massive numbers. Check how the company sends you this traffic many will just use hosting sites and send people to the wrong site, IE they were looking for Bangkok parties and they got sent to Bangkok business the comparison is so slight but this is what they work on. Yes your server traffic yells success but underneath it’s worse than a virus.

*5 Social networks I have already blogged about how business is taking over Facebook. I get fewer moans now about how I am on Facebook for business and get more moans if I post a joke. ha ruddy ha! Again Social networking works and it’s the initial set up that takes the work finding friends without getting blocked and Facebook have only 500 million people so they will get around to telling you why you were blocked eventually ..Not! So don’t get blocked follow the rules.
Grow your friends and then start groups, use your groups as a community base. I tell all my clients never use the company name to start a group, your page yes, but would you join a group called xyz solicitors or a group called The Bangkok Councillor? Where we give out free Pro Bono Advice. The majority of sites are the same. Once you are set up it’s like the proverbial snowball. And if you think it’s too late now I will tell you 95% feel like you and you will be the top 5% by starting today!

Get your self on a course and save your self a fortune, it’s not hard to learn you don’t have to be a coder or a webmaster just take a few days to learn then promise your self an hour a day on it and you will never get burned!!

Medical Tourism in Thailand – The Answer to America’s Health Crisis?

February 25th, 2010

As politicians and lobbying pharmaceutical and insurance companies are continuing to stop any possibilities of affordable health care in the United States,  more and more people are looking to other countries such as Thailand for their medical care.

Thailand is becoming recognized as one of the leading countries for affordable health care .

Many physicians here have gotten their medical degrees from leading Universities in the United States and in Europe.  Many people are surprised to find out how modern the Thailand hospitals  and medical clinics are here and how incredibly professional and up to date the doctors are with the latest medicines and treatments.  Hospitals are very affordable and staying a few days in the hospital and surgery won’t cost so much that you have to remortgage your house.

At www.contactbangkok.com, we can help you find the best doctors and specialists in Thailand that you need.  Thousands of people come here every year for everything from Heart Surgery to Dentistry.  Some of the most world-renowned doctors of Plastic Surgery and Cosmetic Surgery practice in Thailand as well.

Often people come to Thailand for medical treatments because a friend recommends it to them.  They decide to check it out first and at the very least experience a nice vacation in exotic Thailand.  Most people are delighted to find excellent medical care and affordable medication, and those who don’t simply didn’t know how to find the best doctors. www.contactbangkok.com can help you get on the right track.

I personally have experience with medical services here.  I  was given four thousand dollars to get extensive and overdue dental work done.  At that price I could afford about three caps and not much else.  A friend recommended that I come over here and go to a dentist that he knew, Dr. Montri.  I decided to take a chance and go for it because I needed at least eight caps as well as old fillings removed that were leaking mercury.

Dr. Montri turned out to be the former dean of the dentistry college at the University of Chiang Mai. He spoke perfect English and did everything to get me set up including finding a nice place to stay. He showed me an incredible amount of attention and had eight teeth capped over the next month with the highest quality gold/porcelain caps.  He spent an extraordinary amount of time making sure that each cap fit perfectly and the my bite was perfect.  He said this was absolutely necessary to make sure that no food got in the cracks so that they would last me the rest of my life.  I got quite an education about the fine points of good dental work, and the good Doctor would often take me out for dinner after working on me.
Since then I have been to a few dentists back in California to have my teeth cleaned.  Each time the dentist told me that it was some of the best dental work they have ever seen- and I’m not exaggerating.

On my trip I met several people who had come from all over the world for a variety of medical reasons. Each one of them had had a very positive experience.  The costs of things in Thailand were quite inexpensive, such as a CAT scan cost only $150 and a night in the hospital was only $50.  This made me take a real long look at what really is the cost of good medical care.

So whatever your medical needs are, Thailand offers the most advanced medical services in surgery, preventative health care, holistic healing, massage,or spa retreats, Thailand is definitely a good place to look into.

The Beautiful LIfe -Thai Style

February 23rd, 2010

If you want to build a beautiful office, or a house in Thailand, there are many exciting ways to go about it. Reasonably priced real estate, brilliantly created designs, and inexpensive labor make building in Thailand a joy, if you know how to navigate the legalities of development safely. It is a great investment, if you know how.

The real estate values in Bangkok have doubled in the last three years and show no signs of slowing.

Choosing a good architect and construction company are critical. Designers here are often well versed in Feng Shui which can make all the difference.

furniture

So much incredible furniture is being manufactured in Thailand these days. A mixture of modern and natural at very affordable prices is the current trend. Most manufacturers are the inspiration for the designs that have made IKEA, who manufacture in Vietnam, the largest furniture outlet in the world. Whether you are a store owner wanting to stock your store with furniture or you are living in Thailand, shopping for furniture in Thailand is full of choices. Whether you like the natural handmade styles or the most modern, there is so much to choose from.

Many of the foreign tourists who come to visit Thailand, are here to take advantage of the many products manufactured here. Whether they are filling there stores or selling online, it is a thriving market that shows little sign of slowing down.

OTOP, one tambon (a.k.a. village) one product, caused an expansion of handcrafted goods and products in Thailand. Introduced nearly a decade ago, each village would have one superior product chosen to be branded and marketed internationally. From fashion accessories to every kind of home furnishing imaginable. Now OTOP has ended, but this 21st century tradition continues as villages throughout Thailand continue to manufacture excitingly beautiful products. It is so easy to make a simple home into a stylish design for a small price.

One great way to see the wide range of products is to go to one of the many marketplaces throughout Thailand, or just drive through the countryside and keep your eyes open. You will be surprised what you will find.

Don’t put all your Branding into one media basket

February 21st, 2010

There are a number of attitudes to Social media that Gurus are self proclaiming will end all other forms of media. Here we will try to put things into prospective.

Like anything, we try to keep a broader view. Social media is growing, and every company should be putting some time into this, however some facts pointed out by Nielson Media (I’ll send you a copy upon request) point out that although Social media has grown to around 10% of all marketing now, it certainly not enough to drop your lunch date with the newspaper editor or T.V. Executive.

The rest of the media world has been flat. TV has dropped a few points; Magazines have gained a few points. Radio has been relatively stable. So before you start to train your graphic designer how to use Twitter and Facebook remember what has happened to My space and Friendster who are unfortunate victims of the so called new media revolution’

The Social media crowd will tell you people don’t want one way communication as in a TV. They want a community, this is a little narrow minded. Nielson media found that nearly 30% of US homes have Digital Video Recorders (DVR), less than 5% of viewing is time shifted. It turns out that people enjoy being entertained. They even might sometimes prefer to talk to someone they are watching TV next to, rather than online. Or like some people who have to talk all day for a living, being spoken to is as good as a rest.

Editorial speaking Marketing people will tell you it’s about choice yes you can organize what you want to read through blogs and organize everything through RSS. But if you subscribe to the paradox of choice by Barry Schwartz he argues that we like to know what is out there and when we are exposed to more we get to find things we did not know we liked, so for this reason it would be foolish to forget the printed media, after all we need to grow our imaginations.

Social media is a branding tool but you should not forget the power of traditional branding avenues and again branding is simply ‘trust’ it’s when you hand your card to another business person and they say
“Ah yes I’ve seen your logo “
How do you feel? It’s a lot easier to continue after that!
For products that have short product cycles, advertising can translate directly into sales. However, durable goods advertise to consumers who are years away from a purchase and business services often depend on retaining clients over a period of years. Many marketers have to deal with consumer behavior that is far more complex than simply counting clicks. Thailand has many branding avenues many have seen awesome branding on contactbangkok.com

Evolutionary speaking social media will grow but it will eventually mature and it will become part of branding and marketing as a whole and it will sit alongside everything else that is, was and will continue to be part of your brand awareness campaign

Farmers profit more from Organic Farming in Thailand

February 18th, 2010

Organic farming is gaining in popularity in Thailand. Farmers who choose to change their methods from the standard chemical fertilizers and pesticides to the healthier organic farming, enjoy the benefits of not only a healthier diet and environment, but also have the added benefit of getting a higher price for their crops.

Rice production is the most important agricultural product in Southeast Asia. Countless businesses and the millions of rice farmers are often at the mercy of politics, the environment, and the market value of rice.

Although organic rice farming is relatively uncommon in Thailand, where most farmers remain attached to their chemical fertilizers and industrial pesticides, those who have taken the green plunge are reaping double rewards.

The main reason that most farmers don’t grow organically is because it is easier for them to buy products and they don’t have to change how they farm. Even though using chemicals is a relatively new method that started in the last 50 years, that is what most farmers are familiar with and have been doing most of their lives. Those who have made the switch, are glad that they did and enjoy the extra benefits. What makes the biggest impact is educating the farmers as to the benefits of organic farming.

Environmental and health concerns are leading many farmers to investigate growing organically. As markets for organic produce expand around the world, the opportunities for more profitable crops and healthier lives also are growing.
Some of the biggest environmental concerns with chemical farming concern the pollution of groundwater. About half of the nitrate in the artificial fertilizer used on crops is dissolved by rain. The dissolved nitrate runs off the fields to contaminate water courses. Where repeated deep plowing is used to turn over the ground, heavy rains can carry away the topsoil and leave the ground useless for cultivation.
Damage to the structure of soil by compression is a serious problem in areas that are intensively farmed. Conventional tillage may involve a tractor passing over the land six or seven times, and the tire tracks can cover up to 90 per cent of a field. Even a single tractor pass can compress the surface enough to reduce the porosity of the soil by 70 per cent, increasing surface run-off and, therefore, water erosion. In the worst cases, the surface run-off may approach 100 percent – none of the water penetrates the surface.

The largest increases in organic food production have been in Asia, Africa and Latin America. All three regions have reported triple-digit growth in organic farmland since 2000. Although production of organic foods has become global, the proliferation in organic standards is fragmenting the organic food industry.

Demand for organic foods is concentrated in affluent countries. Most sales are from countries like Japan, South Korea and Taiwan where consumers have high purchasing power. Increasing awareness of organic production methods and the link between good health and diet is stimulating consumer demand in these countries.
Many kinds of organic products are being produced in Thailand, Jasmine rice, Wild rice, and many organic canned fruits and vegetables including such exotics as Mulberry Juice, Durian, Lychee, Longan, and Mangosteen. But this is just the beginning as more farmers tap into the lucrative organic agricultural market. Other products that follow this trend are organic dyes, organic oils, and organic fertilizers.

Getting organically certified in Thailand is an important start to making the switch to organic. This is an absolute must if you want to export any products and have them wear the label “Organic”. Another important label to include is non-gmo. GMO, or genetically modified organisms, are really being pushed by the large agribusinesses such as Monsanto. Many people are concerned that these genetically altered plants are not only berry unhealthy but can cross breed with existing natural genetics. In the book, Seeds of Change, studies were done on how the alteration of the genetic code causes the natural amino acids and proteins to become inorganic garbage or worse yet making the food toxic to the body. This adds up to less nutritional value and more waste for the body to have to get rid of. Whereas humans often don’t notice the difference between gmo and genetically natural produce, animals seem to have a better sense of what is original and what is fake grain. In tests done in the same book, when organic yellow corn and grains were put side by side with gmo corn and grains, mice ate the organic grains and didn’t touch the gmo grains. Most people don’t have the sensitivity to tell the difference, and unfortunately international standards allow gmo products to be labeled as organic. It is up to the manufacturer to make this distinction clear and the consumer to choose intelligently.

A Good Climate for Business in Thailand

February 18th, 2010

According to recent polls only 13 per cent of UK expats intend to retire in the UK, and 5 per cent of all surveyed plan to spend the retirement in Thailand. The combination of warm weather, and inexpensive housing and food have driven many people to explore other countries as new places to do business and create residence. For expats, doing business in Thailand is a lot easier then it used to be. Web services offer a wide range of business opportunities.

Thirty years ago it was rare to see a westerner in southeast Asia. But that has changed as an ever-growing population of international travelers have settled permanently in southeast Asia. Along with the these newcomers comes a cultural exchange that has changed the face of asia. Signs are often written in English and children are being taught English as a second language. The internet has also played a huge role in accelerating the relocation of people as now they can operate international businesses from abroad.

While the global economic crisis has made for some difficult times for many countries, China has not been impacted as much. Where imports to Europe and North America were the prominent export markets until 2005, now the China has become the leading importer of everything from food products to electronics. Thailand currently is the leading producer of microchips and computer electronics.

While the UK has long kept strong relationships with the Kingdom of Thailand, US’s relationship with Thailand has been temperamental Hillary Clinton, secretary of state for the USA, has noted the importance of business relationships with Asian countries. She has attended the ASEAN conference in 2009, and was followed by a visit from president Barack Obama. This is considered to be quite a contrast to the former president, George W. Bush’s foreign policy. The former US secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice skipped two out of four ASEAN meetings. When Bush visited Indonesia after Sept. 11, he was said to be “in and out as fast as he could” and focused almost exclusively on the issues of on terrorism. As Bush came to dwell more and more on wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Paal says, it started to send a message that the U.S. cared more about its wars then it did on world peace. Fortunately this US policy is changed to more of a constructive one of global cooperation.

As political climates, Thailand remains the land of smiles and a wonderful place to live for anyone.

Thailand’s Getting Greener

February 18th, 2010

Alternative energy sources are becoming more and more important for a beautiful future.  Many wonderful solutions have become available in the last decade. Thailand has become a hotspot for green energy solutions. The conditions are ripe for these eco-friendly solutions.  The Thai government strongly supports these types of industries and has created attractive incentive programs for these kinds of companies to do business in Thailand.

One of the most popular green energy solutions in solar power. This is an especially attractive solution in Thailand.  Heating water using solar energy is a simple way to cut down on your electricity bill and can be done with simple systems that take the abundant heat from the sun and stores it in an insulated water tank for use anytime day or night.  Solar cells are become more efficient all the time and can be bought at several locations throughout Thailand.

Another green energy solution is to turn landfill wast into electricity.  Thermonic Electric has recently begun looking into providing energy solutions in Thailand.  Their TEPS system is the most efficient versions of organic energy conversion available. The process takes garbage at a landfill, and turns it into steam energy with  almost zero greenhouse emissions.  Currently the most common energy facilities rely upon diesel fuel, which as you know emits large amounts of carbon and greenhouse gases.
Planting trees may be the best way to address global warming.  Not only can they transform carbon dioxide into oxygen, but the also attract rain by creating cooling areas which causes atmospheric condensation.  Trees act as natural filters of our air. Sustainable management, planting, and rehabilitation of forests can increase carbon sequestration. In fact the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization states global carbon retention resulting from reduced deforestation, increased forest regrowth and more agro-forestry and plantations could make up for about 15% of carbon emissions from fossil fuels over the next 50 years (2006).

If you don’t have time to plant a tree yourself you can create a business relationship with the plant a tree today foundation.
